Michael Stevenson is a visual artist based in Baltimore, Maryland. His work investigates how mark and image operate as sign systems across scripts, cultures, and bodies - remaining legible without being literal. Working in both acrylic on canvas and water media on paper, he builds surfaces through accumulation: gestural drawing, flat color, and structural line held in tension without resolution. His work moves between large-scale canvas and intimate works on paper, maintaining a consistent inquiry into what form carries when meaning resists easy translation. He is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Award and a full fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center, among other awards and residencies. His work is held in private and institutional collections.
